Service and Christmas
Hopefully we have spent the last few weeks thinking about all that we have to be thankful for, and indeed, when we compare ourselves with people in many other countries, we do have a lot to be thankful for, and a lot that we take for granted. If we have money in the bank, or even change in a jar at home, we are better off than many people in this world. In the United States, we can worship and gather with our friends and family without fear of persecution, where many in the world do not have this freedom. Many of us find ourselves in relatively good health, all things considering. I could do without quite so many cheeseburgers, but when compared to AIDS ravaged countries, we are blessed.
Every one of us has a lot to be thankful for, but as we approach Christmas and go throughout this holiday season, I ask that we take time, not just to be thankful, but to use the gifts and the blessings we have been given in service to others. We have people in need this holiday season right here in Huntsville.
While many of us feast this holiday season, there are families who will rely on the generosity of one of the many canned food drives. While many of us are exchanging gifts, there are some children who are relying on one of the many toy drives. And there are many who will not have food on the table or gifts to exchange at all this holiday season. I hope that we all take time to be thankful for what we have, but also that we are willing to give back some of our time and gifts to benefit those who might be in need this season.
One of the developmental assets for building a healthy community for our kids relates to service. What better way for a family to spend time together this holiday season than to serve those less fortunate. Help one of our many non-profits with a toy drive, or help collect food for one of the food pantries. Many groups could use our help this holiday season. If you need help finding a place to serve, feel free to call our office and we will help brainstorm with you.
We really do have a lot to be thankful for this holiday season. I hope that we will be able to take some time away from the hustle and bustle of this busy season to spend time with those we love and to work together through service to make this a happy season for everyone.
