Asset #6

Parental Involvement in Schooling—Parents are actively involved in helping a young person succeed in school.

Getting involved in school activities and organizations is not limited to just the students. It’s a good idea for parents to be active in their child’s school and know more than just the grades on a report card. Meeting the teachers or joining the school’s PTA are just a couple of examples of parents getting involved in schools.

Parental involvement in school can help decrease the chances of a child having learning problems or getting involved in illegal activities and can help improve a child’s overall performance in school.

The entire community can help encourage parents to become more active in school. Using the local media and publicizing school activities is a start. Neighbors can baby-sit so that parents are able to attend a school board or PTA meeting.

Parents can develop this asset by contacting the school or the child’s teacher if there is something they need to talk about, or just to check in. Businesses can help parents be involved by providing flexible scheduling to allow parents the opportunity to participate in their child’s activities.
