Community Values Youth

It’s important for youth to feel appreciated in the community. Letting them know they are valued gives them a sense of belonging and improves their self-esteem. They are more likely to become a positive role model in the community with just a little positive feedback.

In the Huntsville community, 24 percent of youth feel they are valued by adults. Nationally, 20 percent of youth feel valued in their community. According to “What Teens Need to Succeed,” 65 percent of adults who participated in a national survey think today’s teenagers are rude and irresponsible.

Teens must be willing to do their share to gain the respect of adults. Being courteous and respectful to elders is a start. Youth should be conscious of their behavior in public and should set an example for others and prove to the community that they can be responsible.

Adults should make an effort to volunteer time at youth-oriented programs and let a teen know when he or she is being a good role model for other youth. The Huntsville I.S.D. athletic teams can always use support. Members of the community should also take an opportunity to enjoy performances by other Huntsville I.S.D. or community art, music or theatre programs and, more importantly, congratulate them on their successes. Adults can lend a hand through volunteer work with the youth at local sports leagues, community programs or in your congregation.

The City of Huntsville and Huntsville’s Promise are demonstrating how they value the youth opinion through the creation of the Youth Advisory Board. In April, youth and adults from many local churches worked side-by-side to help improve the quality of homes in our own community through the Impact Huntsville project. Often we as a society focus on the negative acts of our youth, but forget about all of the positives. Our youth are making an enormous impact on our society. We should celebrate their successes and encourage other positive actions however we are able.
