When the
football game ends, the fun is just beginning for area students at the annual
Fifth Quarter event.
Fifth Quarter provides all local seventh- through 12th- graders an opportunity
to hang out and have some fun long after the last touchdown has been scored.
Friday night, immediately following the Huntsville High football game, the
intramural fields on the SHSU campus will be opened up for flag football,
volleyball and free pizza.
The Faith In Action Committee, a coalition of local churches, pioneered the
event in an effort to provide students with some much needed entertainment in a
safe environment.
“I think its very effective,” said Jackie Pace, member of the Faith In Action
Committee. “If you come out to the event you see all these teens together,
interacting and having a great time, playing sports and just kind of mingling.”
The event may be the brain child of several local churches, but the aim is to
include everyone.
“It’s really encouraging because you see students from all walks of life,” said
Tommy Hooker, one of the event’s chaperones.
“It really pushes diversity within the community. It’s not just one youth group
or entity, it’s everyone.”
Hooker stressed the importance of events like Fifth Quarter given how little
there is often available for local teens.
“There’s not many places for kids to go. There’s a very limited number of events
that parents can really feel comfortable letting their kids go to,” Hooker said.
“We also encourage as many adults to go as well.”
