Oliver takes over key position

By Tori Rowe/Staff writer

For one local man, faith and a career are two areas of life that have never joined together, until now.

George Oliver is the new Faith In Action coordinator for Huntsville's Promise, and said he's now ready to put his faith to work in the community.

With the Faith In Action committee, Oliver will be supervising such activities as Impact Huntsville, a service weekend that brings together the youths of local churches and low-income residents of Huntsville who need home repairs.

Impact Huntsville, held April 3 and 4, was one of Oliver's first duties. Deciding who gets home repairs and who needs the most help in the future will be one of Oliver's duties, but he said he can't do it without support.

"I invite youth ministers and churches to call me, because we need to get young volunteers and supervisors," Oliver said. "We also need to know what people in the community need our services."

Scott Atnip is the director of Huntsville's Promise and said he's excited about the opportunity to be able to work with Oliver.

"George has a lot of contacts in the community, and he can help get the young people involved," he said. "This program is trying to inspire the young people in our community to volunteer their time."

Bringing the youths and the elderly community in Huntsville together is a main goal of the Faith In Action committee, and Atnip said Oliver is the perfect person to accomplish that step.

"We'd like to create a database to pair youth with those with long-term health needs - the elderly and the disabled," Atnip said. "We're attempting to bridge the community together.

"We hope to foster strong one-on-one relationships between these two groups in the community," he said. "Whether it's helping with someone's groceries, yardwork, housework, we want the bond to grow so they want to go back week after week."
