SHSU graduate is making Huntsville a 'promise'

By Tori Rowe/Staff writer

Huntsville has a new kid on the block.

Scott Atnip is the new Executive Director for Huntsville's Promise, but he's not exactly new to Huntsville.

Atnip graduated from Sam Houston State University in 2001 and moved to Austin to attend the University of Texas.

After graduating with a Masters of Public Affairs in May, Atnip began looking for a way back to Huntsville.

"The job came open and I jumped on it," he said.

"I saw that there were some issues that could be dealt with in Huntsville. There's major room for opportunity here."

When Atnip attended SHSU, he interned for the city manager and worked for the Healthy Communities Initiative, which turned into Huntsville's Promise.

"Huntsville is a community of opportunity. This is a place where kids can grow up to be healthy and happy and we can make some big differences," Atnip said.

Family and friends were also a major factor in Atnip's decision to make Huntsville his home.

"I loved Austin and Houston, but I'm more of a small town guy. I have a lot of friends and family in this area, and Huntsville was a small town that I knew.

"It's not big, it's not small, it's just right," he said.

Growing in his career and community is Atnip's main focus right now.

"I hope that we can make some good changes.

"My favorite thing about being here has been having the opportunity to work with and for people who are committed to making a positive change in the youth of this community. It's great to work with energetic and compassionate people," he said.

"I'm glad I'm close to the university I graduated from. I'd like to be able to give back to the university, and one day, be able to help SHSU reach its full potential."

With his free time, he spends time with family and friends and watches his favorite sport, college football.

"Whenever I can pull some time together, I watch college football. My dream is to travel to see UT or SHSU play in a national football championship."

Atnip's one guilty pleasure is a wild night out with his friends.

"On the weekends, we have 'guys night out'. We play cards, drink Dr. Pepper and eat candy until all hours of the morning."
