Families encouraged to spend time together

By The Huntsville Item

Huntsville's Promise kicked off its "Monday Night is Family Night Initiative" on May 3 at Eastham Thomason Park.

This initiative is a result of a Huntsville City Council resolution passed in the spring of 2003. According to a 2001 Search Institute Survey of Huntsville Schools, more than 30 percent of local families do not spend quality time together.

This initiative asks families to sign a pledge card to spend Monday nights together as a family. In exchange, the families receive a family night card, good for discounts at local businesses.

Over 200 individuals attended with about 175 individuals from about 50 families signing the pledge cards. Guests were treated to two local bands, Influence and a group of Sam Houston State University faculty, as well as games, snacks and speakers, including Mayor Karl Davidson and Dr. David Prier, President of the Huntsville's Promise Board of Directors.

For more information about Family Night, to make the pledge, or to commit your business, please contact Scott Atnip, director of Huntsville's Promise at (936) 291-5950.
