Students
began their first day of the semester at Huntsville High School on Monday by
becoming better acquainted with the district’s goals and beliefs during a
presentation from the Huntsville Youth Council.
HYC made several presentations to students Monday and will make several more
today.
“The Foundation of Excellence is something we adults are using as a tool to help
us strive to provide a better education for the students,” HHS Principal Mike
Lamb said. “Last semester, it came to our attention that the students didn’t
know anything about it.”
Lamb explained the process of creating the goals and beliefs for the district.
He said last year a group of 100 people, including bankers, plumbers and peers
from the community, came together to help create the Foundation of Excellence.
Co-chair Caroline Erb has been a member of HYC during her sophomore and junior
years.
She said members met throughout the break to find a way to help students
understand.
“We received the mission statement and core of beliefs from Dr. Montgomery,” she
said. “We proceeded to sit down and meet to discuss different things about the
core of beliefs and goals that we thought were important to present to students
at Huntsville High School.
“Through all of our input, we were able to put it all together and create a
presentation that the students will understand.”
The district has a goal to “provide a rigorous curriculum utilizing varied
instructional strategies to differentiate instruction and ensure a high level of
academic success for all students.”
HYC translated the goal to “provide challenging courses using different teaching
methods and ensure a high level of academic success for all students.”
“We are finding out a lot of students are not aware that these goals and beliefs
are in place and that we’ve spent a lot of time creating it,” Erb said. “It’s
good to know that all of our hard work in the past creating these get out there
for the students to understand and know that the adults in the community really
do care about them and their education.”
